The past few weeks have been busy with publicity events for "Shadow Command." I've been doing satellite radio interviews--10 to 30-minute phone interviews with radio stations around the country--plus booksignings. Almost incidentally--but most importantly--I've been pushing forward with book #21.
The events in Las Vegas and Henderson NV were OK, but the booksignings at Costcos in Reno, Tucson, and Phoenix were great. Surprisingly, the booksignings at Ft. Lewis and McChord Air Force Base in the Seattle area were good too. I say "surprisingly" because military base exchanges are like department stores: few people go there just to buy books. But the store managers set up great displays, did a lot of advance publicity, and had associates really push the event, so both signings were excellent.
But the real treat were the events in a real out-of-the-way location that I am proud to call "home"--Mountain Home, Arkansas.
I don't know where the request for a radio interview originated. My Dad lives in the area, so I assumed it started with him; I am a sponsor and supporter of the Twin Lakes Playhouse; and I still own property in Marion County. However it happened, it did. KTLO-AM and Brenda Nelson's show "Talk of the Town" requested a 10-minute phoner.
I thought: why not turn it into a live interview? While I was at it, I had Jennifer Slattery at HarperCollins Publishing inquire about booksigning opportunities in the area, and I flew out to Mountain Home last week.
The good folks in Mountain Home made me feel like the friggin' Prince of Wales. I did two interviews with Brenda Nelson, one 30-minute taped interview (hear it at http://www.ktlo.com/wireready/news/04490_Author_Dale_Brown_Interview_073305.php), with my Dad at the microphone with me, plus one live interview to publicize my appearance at Hastings Entertainment that evening for a booksigning.
The booksigning at Hastings Entertainment in Mountain Home was excellent. I signed lots of copies of "Shadow Command" and an impressive assortment of mine and the "Dreamland" series backlist, and met lots of great folks who seemed to really appreciate my visit.
The weather was great--hot and humid but still pleasant--until my departure Saturday morning, when the Ozark region experienced some real rip-roaring thunderstorms. I was awakened early that morning by lightning hitting a power pole about fifty yards away, knocking out power for a couple hours. I drove through drenching rain in Harrison, Arkansas but made it OK to Fayetteville and headed home. More thunderstorms in Dallas delayed me another 4 hours, but I finally made it home safe and sound.
The office is in Chaos but at least the bills are paid and everything is ready for work.
The Piper Aztec is getting a minor upgrade to install the GPSNAV-396 portable GPS and weather receiver in the avionics stack, plus GAMI fuel injectors to allow more precise fuel flow.
The weather here in Tahoe is just plain delightful: high 70s and low 80s and very low humidity with clear skies. We are experiencing a lot of haze from the brush and forest fires in California, but it is still Heaven here in summertime.
There are a few national security-related issues that have gotten me steamed lately, and I'll share those with you tomorrow. Later!
